  • 3 medium apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Braeburn), peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground cardamom (optional)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted and cooled
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt or sour cream
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar (for topping)
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Prepare the apples by peeling, coring, and slicing them thinly.
  3. In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and cardamom.
  4. In another bowl, mix melted butter, sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, and yogurt until smooth.
  5. Combine dry ingredients with wet ingredients until just mixed.
  6. Spread half of the batter into a greased pan; layer half of the apple slices on top.
  7. Add the remaining batter over apples and arrange the rest of the apple slices decoratively on top.
  8. Sprinkle sugar and cinnamon mixture over the apples.
  9. Bake for about 40–45 minutes until golden brown.
